Mock Marinara



  • 5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1/2 large onion, chopped
  • 1/2 medium fennel bulb, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian herb blend
  • 1 1/2 cups no-mato base (see recipe)
  • 4 splashes coconut aminos
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1-2 cups bone broth
  • 4 tablespoons basil, julienned
  • 2 tablespoons rendered animal fat
  • Sea salt, black pepper, and balsamic vinegar to taste


  1. Add 3 tablespoons of olive oil to a medium saucepot. Add onion, fennel, garlic, and Italian seasoning and saute until vegetables start to brown. Add no-mato base, coconut aminos, garlic powder, and bone broth to pot and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for approximately 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the fresh basil, remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil and rendered animal fat. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed with salt, pepper, and balsamic vinegar.
