Dina’s Pap Pap’s Sugar Cookies with Cherry Icing



  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup dairy sour cream
  • 1sp vanilla


  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • Healthy tsp of softened butter
  • 2 tbsp cherry juice
  • 2-4 tbsp milk or water. (Note: add very carefully one at a time to desired consistency. You want this thick enough to hold on cookie. If it gets too thin, just add a bit more powdered sugar. Too thick? add more cherry juice)


Because no Christmas cookie party is complete without sugar cookies cut into cool shapes. And because who doesn’t love pink icing that gets its color from cherry juice?

Makes 7-8 dozen.

  1. Beat sugar, butter, egg until fluffy. Beat in sour cream and vanilla until smooth. Gradually mix in dry ingredients, and form a ball. Refrigerate several hours or overnight.

  2. Roll out, cut in shape of choice and bake 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

  3. Combine all icing ingredients and frost over cooled cookies.
