Here are our nutrition team’s top tips for newbie vegans:
1 • If you’re a cheese lover, try nut and seed based cheeses and spreads. They come in a bunch of flavors and cheesy textures (they even melt).
2 • Substitute maple syrup for honey to satisfy your sweet tooth. It can even add dimension and flavor to a lot of sweet treats and baked goods.
3 • Lentil or minced mushrooms make a great substitute for ground meat. They’re filling and easy to cook in a lot of ways.

 

Hidden Ingredients

There are few non-vegan ingredients that can slip under the radar. Make sure to check labels for a vegan friendly mark, and when in doubt, just ask! Here’s what to look out for:

• Check baked goods for the addition of honey or dried milk powder.
• White cane sugar is usually processed with bone char, made from cows.
• Some wines use fining agents like casein, albumin or isinglass, all derived from animals.
• Asian inspired items frequently contain fish sauce or oyster sauce.
• Gelatin is used in a lot of everyday grocery products and baked goods.
