Few grocery stores can say that their local produce buyer has not only worked on an organic farm, but completed a master’s degree thesis on the history of organic agriculture in the United States and the Pacific Northwest.
Chris started out working on a small organic farm near San Diego in the late 1980s. After a few years working the fields, he took a job with Nature’s Fresh Northwest so he could understand the retail side of the organic foods movement.
Chris joined us in 1999 to help us open our first store. He’s continued to immerse himself in the study of organic food and recently completed his master’s degree from Portland State University.
Chris’ passion for food and farming is obvious and he’s especially interested in working to create long-term partnerships with local growers. He says he’s proud to be a part of the efforts to build a regional food economy that is ecologically sound, economically viable and socially equitable.
When he’s not working in one of our stores or tromping around a local farm, Chris enjoys spending time outdoors with his family hiking, swimming and barbecuing. Chris is also an avid gardener and maintains his own personal mini-farm in Northeast Portland.
