Benefit Barbecues and Shortcake Fundraisers



Benefit Barbecue - Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP)
Saturday and Sunday, September 11-12, Noon to 4pm


During this weekend’s benefit, we’ll donate 100% of the $6 burger price to Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP).

Meal includes: Pacific Village beef or veggie burger on our bakery's organic bun, coleslaw or a piece of local fruit and a beverage. All for just $6!



Children's Healing Art Project (CHAP) brings the healing power of art to children in crisis and their families with a mobile team of teaching artists working in Portland's children's hospitals. CHAP has created art classes tailored to the needs of the children we serve in our partner facilities: Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and Shriners Hospital for Children. In 2009, CHAP worked with over 10,000 children and their families.

Benefit Barbecue - Our House

In conjunction with the opening of our Hawthorne store, we're hosting a Benefit Barbecue for Our House, one of our new neighbors in the Hawthorne neighborhood!




Our House is a non-profit that provides integrated health and housing services to people with HIV/AIDS. Guided by compassion, collaboration and respect, Our House provides 24-hour specialized care, adult foster care, and independent housing with support services.

Thank you to all of our customers who participate in our Benefit Barbecue program. We also want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who donate their time to cook and serve food. Their dedication and hard work is responsible for the success of this program. Your participation in our Benefit Barbecue program raised $76,361 for local nonprofits in 2009 - a 30% increase from 2008! 


Here is a small sampling of the organizations that have participated in our Benefit Barbecue program:

4Results Mentoring Program - 4Results is a high quality mentoring program in Vancouver, WA. that matches adult volunteer mentors with children in Clark County who are receiving mental health services or who have a parent in prison.

Bradley-Angle House - Bradley-Angle House provides emergency shelter and options for healing to women and children escaping domestic violence. They also run a  24-hour crisis line.

Big Brothers Big Sisters - Big Brothers Big Sisters is an organization that helps children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors. 
 
Bridges to Independence - Bridges to Independence empowers, enriches and educates adolescents and adults with support needs, maximizing their independence and quality of life.

ChemoPal Mentor Program - The Pediatric Chemo Pal Program helps breaks through the isolation, chaos and loneliness of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments by providing trusted, dependable and carefully matched mentors to children and teens.

Clackamas Women's Services - Clackamas Women's Services provides the only two emergency shelters and crisis line for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Clackamas County.
 
Come Rest Awhile - The mission of Come Rest Awhile is to provide affordable residential services in a safe, supportive environment for women in recovery from substance abuse.

Community Action - Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community and are dedicated to helping individuals help themselves and each other.

Community Cycling Center - The Community Cycling Center is the largest non-profit organization in the country that uses the bicycle as a tool for teaching positive life skills to youth. Children in our programs learn bicycle safety and maintenance and earn their own bicycles, locks and helmets.

Community Warehouse - Community Warehouse is a volunteer-based nonprofit agency in Portland that provides furniture and household items to people in need, at no cost to them. Their goal is to help low-income individuals and families improve their quality of life by providing the basic items needed to set up a home. Your donations of furniture and household items go directly to local individuals and families in need. Clients include women escaping domestic violence, individuals and families who have been homeless, elderly persons, people with mental and physical disabilities and migrant and refugee families.

David Douglas Mentor Project  - DDMP is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches a student from the David Douglas School District with an adult mentor from the community. Students selected for the program are those with highest needs (low academic performance, behavior issues, language and cultural barriers) and could benefit from having a positive role model. Mentors will meet with their mentees at least one hour a week at their school, after the school day.
 
Domestic Violence Resource Center - The mission of Domestic Violence Resource Center, the only nonprofit agency in Washington County serving specifically survivors of domestic violence, is to empower all individuals and families to have safe and healthy relationships. Services focus on prevention (presentations, trainings, education), intervention (Monika’s House Shelter, protective orders, counseling, art/play therapy), and empowerment (advocacy, resources, referrals, safety planning).

Ethos Music Center - Ethos Music Center is dedicated to the promotion of music and music-based education for youth in underserved communities.

Family of Friends - Family of Friends matches singles, couples and families with 6- to 9-year-old children in need of additional positive relationships. Mentors meet with a child a few times a month for a year.

Friends of Trees - Friends of Trees is celebrating 20 years of bringing people in the Portland-Vancouver metro area together to plant and care for city trees and urban natural areas.

Good in the Neighborhood - Good in the NeighborHood is a multicultural music and food festival held annually in N/NE Portland. The festival features the best entertainment in the NW, a variety of cultural food vendors, an Information Village, a KidSpace arts & craft area, and an Ethnic Marketplace. Proceeds from the event support the NE Coalition of Neighborhood's community based programs to help empower low-income and at-risk residents.

Girls Inc. - Girls Incorporated is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. With roots dating to 1864, Girls Inc. has provided vital educational programs to millions of American girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives.

Growing Gardens - Growing Gardens digs at the root of hunger in Portland, Oregon by building organic, raised bed vegetable gardens in backyards. Youth Grow school garden clubs grow future vegetable eaters and growers. Learn and Grow classes cover basics to cooking and more.
 
Hoyt Arboretum- Hoyt Arboretum is Portland's global garden in the wild, where we grow and exhibit trees and plants from around the world while educating our community and conserving vitally important plant bio-diversity.

Jackson Bottom Wetland Preserve - Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve is a 725-acre wildlife preserve located within the city limits of Hillsboro, Oregon. The Preserve is a tranquil sanctuary for both people and animals. The quiet open waters, rolling meadows and upland ash and fir woods are homes to thousands of ducks and geese, deer, otters, beavers, herons and eagles.

Leach Botanical Garden - Leach Botanical Garden is a public garden dedicated to the study of botany and horticulture with an emphasis on plants of the Pacific Northwest and an ecologically sensitive approach to gardening. The Garden is committed to providing educational opportunities to members of the public and to maintaining and enhancing the legacy of the Garden's founders, Lilla and John Leach.

Listen to Kids - Listen to Kids has a 23-year history of of providing child abuse and domestic violence prevention and early intervention programs to children and adults. Listen to Kids' programs teach children how to get help if they are being abused and/or are living with domestic violence.

MIKE Program - MIKE Program empowers youth to be ambassadors of health in service to their diverse communities through mentorship, partnership, and the promotion of healthy kidneys.

Mercy Corps - Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.

Metropolitan Youth Symphony - Metropolitan Youth Symphony is a 34-year-old non-profit organization dedicated to the education, development and promotion of young musicians throughout the Portland metropolitan area and southwest Washington; helping youth to develop the skills of concentration, cooperation, discipline, and self confidence. 

OASIS Intergenerational Tutor Program - OASIS is a national education organization dedicated to enriching the lives of adults age 50 and older through lifelong learning and service. Offering stimulating programs in the arts, humanities, health, technology and volunteer service, OASIS brings people together to learn, lead and contribute in their communities.

Oregon Community Warehouse - Community Warehouse is a volunteer-based nonprofit agency in Portland that provides furniture and household items to people in need, at no cost to them. Their goal is to help low-income individuals and families improve their quality of life by providing the basic items needed to set up a home.

The Oregon Humane Society - The Oregon Humane Society aims to foster an environment of respect, responsibility, and compassion for all animals through education, legislation, and leadership. To care for the homeless, to defend the abused, and to fight with unrelenting diligence for recognition of the integrity of all animals.

The Pangaea Project - The Pangaea Project engages groups of low-income high school students from Portland in nine-month programs that combine both local and international service-learning projects, empowering participants to become local community leaders with global perspectives.  The goal is to inspire participants to recognize their own capacity to be agents of change by exposing them to inspiring local and international grassroots community leaders who have overcome adversity in their own lives to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Powerhouse Mentor Program - The mission of Powerhouse is to provide community-based mentoring to youth in foster care to enhance their successful transitions from adolescence to adulthood.

Raphael House of Portland - Raphael House of Portland has been offering shelter to women and children fleeing domestic violence since 1977. Each year, more than 300 women and children access shelter, food, clothing, transportation, support groups and individual support at our Hedco Emergency Shelter and over 3500 people are served by our in-house crisis line. In addition, approximately 400 non-residential survivors receive advocacy services through our transitional program and a program at the Domestic Violence Reduction Unit of the Portland Police.

The Salvation Army West Women's and Children's Shelter - The mission of The Salvation Army West Women's and Children's Shelter is to intervene into the lives of homeless and abused women and children, providing opportunities for self-sufficiency through shelter and support services.

Sellwood Middle School - Located in the heart of Southeast Portland's Sellwood neighborhood, Sellwood Middle School school is known for its commitment to academics, wide range of electives and activities, engaged parent community and dedicated staff. The students start in 6th grade as they make the transition from elementary school, and in three years, they leave well prepared for the rigors of high school.

Share Our Strength
- Share Our Strength is a national nonprofit that inspires and organizes individuals and businesses to share their strengths to help end hunger. Locally, Share Our Strength grants money to Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Hunger Relief Task Force, St. Vincent de Paul and Klamath-Lake Counties Food Bank.

Sisters of the Road Cafe - This Portland café is open to everyone, serving low cost, hot, nutritious meals that can be purchased in a variety of ways, including with cash, food stamps, or in exchange for work. They also provide job training, support to parents and children, and innovative solutions to the issues surrounding poverty and homelessness through self and community advocacy.

Sky’s the Limit - Sky’s the Limit connects youth ages 7-17 who are at risk for gang involvement with mentors who help the youth engage in pro-social activities, bond with positive peer groups, and become more connected to their communities.

Smith and Bybee Lakes - The Friends of Smith & Bybee Lakes is a community based group that advocates the conservation, restoration and enhancement of the Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area as an historical remnant of the Columbia River estuary system. The Friends support the permanent protection of Smith and Bybee Lakes in recognition that natural areas are a valuable resource in an urban environment.

Soroptimist International -
Soroptimist International focuses on human rights and advancing the status of women, with nearly 100,000 members in more than 124 countries and territories world wide. They are the only service organization in the world that holds a General Consultative Status with the United Nations.

Start Making a Reader Today - (SMART). SMART is a nonprofit that envisions an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. Their mission is to engage community volunteers to read one-on-one with K-3 children who need literacy support.

Sustainable Business Network of Portland - An alliance of locally owned independent businesses, service providers, community organizations and individuals committed to building a truly sustainable local economy.
 
Urban Gleaners - Urban Gleaners is a volunteer organization that will pick up excess food from restaurants and markets and deliver that food to local rescue agencies that feed the hungry.  They are a grassroots organization that hopes to inspire similar initiatives throughout Portland.

Urban League of Portland - The Urban League of Portland is one of the region's most respected social service and civil rights organizations. It is a nonprofit, community-based organization headquartered in north Portland and an affiliate of the National Urban League.

Wetlands Conservancy - Founded in 1981, TWC promotes community and private partnerships to permanently conserve Oregon’s greatest wetlands. Working throughout the state, TWC protects and restores these important lands by promoting private and community stewardship, supporting conservation, and working in partnership with local communities.

YMCA - The YMCA offers a diverse range of quality affordable programs that help children thrive and grow. They inspire young people to lead, bring families closer together and encourage individual health and well-being. Their programs provide safe, caring environments, positive role models and opportunities to serve the needs of others. These are the building blocks for strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

Yolanda House of the YWCA -
Yolanda House is an emergency shelter and service program for women survivors of domestic or sexual violence and their children. The house is a confidentially located, modern two-story structure in a quiet Portland neighborhood that shelters about nineteen women and their children. The house was named for a beloved YWCA staffer, Yolanda Panek, who was murdered by her ex-partner.
