Red Bat Press is a small art press located in Portland, featuring the art and design work of artist Carye Bye. Carye started the press in September 2000, after selling her postcards and blank books at the Last Thursday art events on NE Alberta in North Portland. She now produces cards, postcards, small blank books and other printed items with her own original designs for everyday and for a small number of holidays, including Halloween, New Years and Valentine’s Day. New Seasons Market carries her greeting cards, which you can find in our Home Grown card section.
All of Red Bat’s prints are hand printed on a press in Carye’s workshop from wood-cuts designed and hand-carved by the artist herself. Many of the whimsical prints have to do with luck, folklore, and word-play.
Carye lives in North Portland but is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she first became interested in art and printmaking and started a number of her own ‘zines. She has also lived in Ireland, where she developed a deeper appreciate for art and photography, which has influenced her work.
In 1999, Carye moved to San Francisco with her 16-year-old cat, Scooter, where she was a window dresser at the Maritime Bookstore on Hyde Street Pier. This is where she published her first art chapbook (a small, pamphlet-sized paperback book), “The Pea Green Chair.” She moved to Portland the next year, wher e she could become involved in the Independent Publishing Resource Center, sell her prints at monthly art gallery events, and open her own workshop.
New Seasons Market is proud to support Home Grown artists like Carye.
