 Nikki McClure - Olympia, Washington

The art of Nikki McClure is intricate in detail, simple in medium and strong in message. Armed with what must be a very sharp exacto knife, Nikki cuts her bold images from a single sheet of paper, with the dexterity to shape an emotion on a woman’s face or the delicate nature of a papery blossom. Hailing from Olympia, Washington, Nikki is a true Home Grown artist, frequently featuring people interacting with the urban and rural environments of the Northwest. She’s been doing her paper cuts since 1995, and is self taught.

Nikki’s work often uses single words or phrases to embody an intimate relationship between two people or between a person and their environment. For example, “Process” describes a picture of a person diligently stemming a bowl of bright red cherries. “Share your table” heads an intricate picture of many people sharing food together at a large table. Nikki has also contributed pictures to charity causes, such as a print of a home for the Tenants Union. Her work also often depicts the virtues of hard work and patience, as well as celebration in the small things of life – lying on the grass, looking at the sky, and picking small natural treasures up off the ground.

Many of Nikki’s hand-cut treasures are printed onto cards and a yearly calendar, well-coveted among her fans and proudly carried by New Seasons Market. She also reproduces her prints onto posters, books, and T-shirts and contributes to many record and book covers and magazines.

Nikki’s concentrations on community, sustenance, patience and food make her work perfect for a store like New Seasons Market.
