 Herb Pharm - Williams, Oregon

Since 1979, Herb Pharm has quickly grown, from the founders making liquid herbal extracts in their kitchen and selling them out of the back of their van, to being the number-one selling liquid herbal extract in the United States, with over 260 products.

Located in Williams, Oregon, Herb Pharm manufactures single herb liquid extracts, liquid extract compounds, alcohol-free glycerites, herbal oils, topical salves, and herb capsules for use in natural and herbal medicine.  The company integrates traditional herbal knowledge with modern herbal science, creating a superior quality herbal product.

When owner/operators Ed “Herbal Ed” Smith and Sara Katz started in 1979, Herb Pharm was the only alternative to a limited array of medicinal herb products. Demand grew quickly from the beginning, especially after prospective customers heard Ed’s lecture on the benefits of herbal medicine, which he still gives.
In 1989, Ed and Sara outgrew the house that they had been living and working out of, so they acquired a separate building a few miles from their home. In 1993, they realized they couldn’t sustain their business with their own small herb garden and by picking wild herbs from the nearby Siskiyou Mountains alone, so they purchased 85 acres of bare land two miles from their processing plant. It is now a certified organic farm – the “Pharm Farm,” they call it. It is bordered by a living fence of medicinal trees like Gingko, Hawthorn, Thuja, and Chaste Berry and contains over 100 species of medicinal plants. Over half of Herb Pharm’s ingredients are harvested from the Pharm Farm, with the rest sustainable wild-crafted or purchased from other organic herb farms throughout the world.

Medicinal herbs are very prone to threats from over picking and habitat loss, making many herbs endangered, but an herb farm mitigates this chance. The company is certified by United Plant Savers as a botanical sanctuary and engages in many sustainable agriculture techniques, including permaculture, composting, intercropping, and cover cropping.

Over half of Herb Pharm’s ingredients are harvested from the Pharm Farm, with the rest purchased from other organic herb farms around the world or sustainably harvested from the wild by Herb Pharm, keeping in mind the threats of overharvesting.

After harvesting, herbs are sent to the “Plant Plant,” their processing and packaging center, where they are meticulously dried, processed, and extracted for the final product. They have complete control of the extract – from the living plant to the crate the final product is shipped in – ensuring safety and quality. The company also has its own in-house laboratory, where they do herbal research and quality control. They were the first to discover, for example, that dried Gingko Biloba leaves give a much better extract than fresh ones. This is the sort of commitment to quality you can expect from Herb Pharm.

The Pharm Farm also includes a 1.5-acre Botanical Display and Education Garden, only one of the many aspects of the company’s commitment to education. They also run three renowned Herbaculture Work/Study Programs, bringing 12 interns for two months at a time to live and work on the farm, studying agriculture, botany, medinical herbalism and herbal medicine-making. They also offer a wide variety of lectures, online presentations, podcasts, articles and other materials to educate prospective customers about herbal extracts, just as they’ve done from their very first day in business.
