| Stash Tea Company - Tigard, Oregon |
The story of the Stash Tea Company begins inside a quaint Victorian house in nearby Tigard. It was 1972 and seeing loose-leaf tea in grocery stores was something of a rarity. Stash started selling its fragrant loose-leaf teas to area stores and over the course of its 30-year history it has grown to become one of the largest specialty tea business in the United States.
The story behind the name goes back to ancient tea folklore. Back when tea was one of the world’s highest traded commodities it was said that the captain of trade ships would always “stash” the premium tea leaves away for himself. The notion of specialty still lives with Stash Tea today.
Tea may not be shipped on old vessels like it used to be, but its following is still alive and well. “Tea is the second most-consumed beverage in the world, with only water more popular,” Jan Acker, Community Relations Manager of Stash Tea tells us.
Stash recently opened its first retail store in 2005 just down the street from their headquarters in Tigard and the response has been very gratifying to witness Jan says. “The Stash Tea Store is located in front of our plant where our loose leaf tea is packaged so the aroma of exotic teas and spices is especially evident when customers walk in the door.”
With over 200 varieties of specialty teas available, it’d be nearly impossible not to find one you’re crazy about. From Organic Ambootia Darjeeling Green, Chai White, to the classic Double Bergamot Earl Grey, their tea menu ranges from the exotic to the traditional. If you’re a fan of the Peppermint, then you might like knowing that it’s grown in Eastern Oregon’s very own backyard.
Speaking of tea varieties, you’ll find an extensive selection of Stash’s organic teas on our shelves and on our Online Shopping program.
Stash knows a thing or two about sourcing the world’s premium leaves. Tom Lisicki, Stash Tea’s president and CEO for the past 20 years, frequently travels to the tea-producing countries of China, India Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Japan to personally select new teas for their customers.
“We believe in the value of tea as a well-being booster,” Jan says “The time spent selecting, brewing, and enjoying tea, either alone or with family and friends, adds much to the quality of daily life. That's something we're proud to bring to our customers.”
